I was privileged enough to spend my junior and senior years of college working as a Resident Assistant in Verder Hall, the arts affiliated residence hall at Kent State University. Day in and day out, this job continued to teach me a great deal about myself and generally invaluable life skills that will undoubtedly translate seamlessly into my future professional endeavors in any setting. Many of the tasks and roles this job required directly relate to being an educator in both school and museum settings. A resident assistant is required to be a helper, administrator, educator, team member, role model, and a community leader. Other specific duties include creating monthly informative bulletin boards, advertising, planning, budgeting, and executing both social and educational programming, and facilitating various conflict resolution meetings between residents. This job also demanded a great deal of flexibility and excellent time management skills. To further support the department's mission, it was also essential to foster a welcoming, inclusive environment for all student populations, which lead to a heightened awareness of social justice issues. For the 2012-2013 school year, our staff received the honor of Staff of the Year. The pictures below represent a sampling of some of the items I created in this role.
